Escalating Obesity Levels in Ireland

a heart in hands

In this article:

Outgoing CEO of the Irish Heart Foundation Michael O’Shea describes the escalating obesity and heart disease rates as a ‘time-bomb’ for our society and our health services. At the moment it is estimated that 24 % of the Irish population are obese and another 37% are overweight which means over two thirds of the Irish population are overweight or obese.

Efforts have been made to reduce these rates over the last few years but O’Shea feels more support is needed from the government to produce any significant outcome. He also fears ‘that society and Government may only take action when we can no longer afford to treat chronic illness resulting from our obesity epidemic’.

Why would YOU wait for your health to become so poor as a consequence of obesity, sometimes to the extent of chronic illness, before deciding it is time to opt for treatment? You don’t have to wait for others to make that change.  After all it is your own body and your own health that will be affected by what you chose to eat and how you chose to live your life and it is your choice if this effect is a positive or negative one.
