An ankle sprain stretches the ligaments on the outside of the ankle causing pain and swelling in the area. Once the injury occurs or pain/swelling develops you should follow the RICE protocol immediately while you wait to see a professional. The RICE protocol is as follows:

We will provide you with pain relief treatment, advice on strengthening exercises and our Podiatrists will look at the cause of your ankle pain to ensure there is no underlying biomechanical issue which needs to be resolved.
Treatment for ankle pain and ankle sprain usually focuses on reducing the swelling and pain first and once this has subsided our Podiatrist will focus on restoring the motion, flexibility and strength to the affected ankle.
Our Podiatrist may teach you a series of strengthening exercises to improve your ankle and reduce the chance of spraining it again. They may also prescribe orthotics to put in your shoes to give some extra support to your ankle and foot.
