International Day of Persons with Disabilities

In this article:

Today (December 3rd) is the annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which aims to promote a better understanding and awareness of disability issues and to raise support for the dignity, rights and general well-being of those affected by disabilities. The creation of awareness aims to further integrate individuals with disabilities in all facets of political, social, economic and cultural life.

Barriers Affecting People With Disability

Approximately 15% or just over one billion people live with some form of disability, making them the “world’s largest minority”. There are many barriers which can limit involvement in today’s society. These can include physical barriers, issues relating to information technology, legislative or policy barriers, and negative societal attitudes or discrimination.

Ultimately, this means that people with disabilities do not always have equal access to society and essential services, including education, employment, healthcare, public transport, political involvement and justice.

When barriers to inclusion are removed and individuals with disabilities are empowered to fully integrate and participate in society, the entire community benefits. Removing these barriers allows society as a whole to prosper, develop and progress.

Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) highlights the existence of such barriers and identifies them as a central element of disability. Within this convention, disability is recognised as an evolving concept that:

“results from the interaction between persons with impairments and attitudinal and environmental barriers that hinder their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others.”

Accessibility and inclusion for individuals with disabilities are fundamental rights as recognised by the CRPD. The convention urges governments and organisations to take action to ensure that people with disabilities have equal access to all aspects of society.

Despite initiatives like the CRPD, a lack of awareness in many parts of the world remains a significant issue. This continues to hinder progress across major global initiatives, including development goals and inclusion programmes.

Today is an opportunity to highlight the importance of equal rights. By increasing awareness, we can help remove obstacles and move towards full inclusion for people living with disabilities.
