The Injury Hub: Men’s Incontinence

What is incontinence?

Urinary Incontinence is the accidental or involuntary loss of urine from the bladder. Research indicates that the frequency of Urinary Incontinence is much higher than expected. Studies show that 2% to as much as 60% of people experience Urinary Incontinence at some stage in their lives. It is very common for men to experience Urinary Incontinence.

Urinary Incontinence can often be associated with increasing age, cystitis, post-surgery, post trauma or following injury.

How We Can Help.

Symptoms, Treatment & How We Can Help Your Recovery.

Learn about common incontinence symptoms, effective treatments, and how our expert team supports your recovery journey every step of the way.

If you suffer from incontinence, you probably have two or more of the following symptoms:

  • Involuntary loss of urine or a continuous leakage of urine from the bladder.

  • A frequent and urgent need to urinate.

  • A feeling that your bladder is constantly full or that it isn’t empty after urinating.

  • Difficulty urinating even if you have the urge.

  • Releases of urine triggered by movement or by coughing, sneezing, or laughing.

  • The need to get up repeatedly at night to urinate

  • A start-and-stop stream during urination.

Chartered Physiotherapists have a central role in treating incontinence. After a detailed assessment, our Men’s Health Physiotherapist may teach you exercises to strengthen the muscles that hold urine in the bladder, along with other techniques to retrain the bladder, lifestyle changes and advice to promote and maintain continence. You may also be asked to maintain a voiding diary and give details of your general medical history.

If the muscle strengthening exercises are proving ineffective for you, Biofeedback and Electrotherapy may be used to help activate and stimulate the muscles.

Our Physiotherapists can also prescribe a home based device to use as part of your treatment plan – INNOVO. INNOVO has been developed to treat the root cause of bladder weakness and not just the symptoms.

Our Physiotherapists have a great deal of specific clinical experience for the treatment of ankle sprains.

We will provide expert treatment for your ankle pain as well as offering exercises to treat and strengthen your ankle to give you a long term solution to manage any weakness in the ankle and lower limbs.

All of our Chartered Physiotherapists are fully qualified and hold insurance policies so you know that you’re in safe hands.

Had a very positive experience. Had severe back pain and Dylan was able to see me at short notice. He was very thorough and clear in assessing and explaining my condition and structuring a recovery exercise program that worked very succesfully. I am now fully recovered and looking forward to being as active as I was before my injury.

Really happy with the two appointments I had with Dylan Connelly to treat my calf strain. His approach was both professional and personable and he ensured that I was completely comfortable during all phases of the appointments. He explained and demonstrated the exercises in 'lay' terms and ensured that I understood and was happy with the approach and expected outcomes. I would definitely recommend Dylan for any physio needs.

I met with Lisa on three occasions in relation to my hamstring and she was absolutely amazing! So easy to chat to and super informative. You need to book at least a week or two in advance to get a spot with her and it's no surprise. She's absolutely fantastic! He explained and demonstrated the exercises in 'lay' terms and ensured that I understood and was happy with the approach and expected outcomes. I would definitely recommend Dylan for any physio needs.

I went to Olga for 4 or 5 weeks before the marathon this year for hip pain. I was contemplating not running as my long run training had become so painful on the hip. Olga treated with dry needling and massage and over 2 sessions, I saw a big difference. I continued a weekly session to keep me loose and followed her exercise plan. I completed the marathon with no hip issues and felt like my recovery after was a lot faster than previous years.

I can only recommend Dr. Muhammed Sohail. I’ve been to many physio consultants and he’s been the very best so far: dry needling has improved my IT band issues so much over two sessions including my knee pain. I would definitely recommend Dylan for any physio needs.
