High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a dangerous condition of the cardiovascular system that causes serious damage to the blood vessels and heart. Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and greatly increases the risk of premature death from coronary heart disease (CHD) or stroke. Blood pressure usually rises with age, with 30% of the population aged 30 and 70% of those aged 70 having hypertension.

It is important to visit your GP if you think you are at risk or high blood pressure. Your GP will measure your blood pressure, but they may also screen for other health markers if they think it is necessary. After you visit your GP, it is recommended that you consult with a Dietitian.
Hypertension cannot be cured fully but it can be managed and controlled through small diet modifications and other modest lifestyle changes.
Blood pressure is recorded with two numbers. The systolic pressure (higher number) is the force at which your heart pumps blood around your body. The diastolic pressure (lower number) is the resistance to the blood flow in the blood vessels. They’re both measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg)
As a general guide:
A blood pressure reading between 120/80mmHg and 140/90mmHg could mean you’re at risk of developing high blood pressure if you don’t take steps to keep your blood pressure under control.
During your initial consultation, your Dietitian will assess your diet and lifestyle. The overall aim of diet therapy is to achieve a healthy blood pressure level to reduce the risk of stroke and/or a heart attack.
Your Dietitian will also carry out a complete nutritional assessment, taking a diet history, body composition analysis including weight, BMI, waist circumference, body fat percentage, lean body mass, waist to hip measurement and more. You will receive:
