The Physio Experts.
Dry Needling Treatment From A Chartered Physiotherapist.
What Is Dry Needling And How Can It Help You?
Dry needling is a technique used by our suitably trained Chartered Physiotherapists as part of a wider treatment plan, for patients where it’s clinically appropriate. It is not recommended as a standalone treatment – your physiotherapist will assess you first and recommend it only where it fits your overall plan of care.
The technique targets myofascial trigger points – localised, tender areas within a muscle, often felt as a ‘knot’, that are associated with muscle pain and restricted movement.
A fine needle is inserted directly into the trigger point. This can produce a local twitch response – a brief, involuntary contraction of the muscle fibre. Where it occurs, this response is generally considered a positive sign that the trigger point has been engaged, and may be accompanied by a short-lived, mild discomfort lasting no more than a second or two. The proposed effects include reduced muscle tension, improved local blood flow, and modulation of the nerve supply to the area, contributing to overall muscle relaxation.
Following treatment, patients commonly report that the area feels softer, less tense, and easier to move.
Dry needling works best as one part of a broader physiotherapy treatment plan, alongside manual therapy, exercise, and rehabilitation advice, completed by a Chartered Physiotherapist with specialist/extended training. If you’re not sure whether it’s suitable for you, the right starting point is a Physiotherapy Assessment, where your physiotherapist will confirm whether it’s an appropriate option for you.

How Do I Book Dry Needling?
Dry needling is not recommended as a standalone treatment – it’s used as part of a wider physiotherapy plan, where your physiotherapist has assessed you and confirmed it’s the right fit. If you’re new to us, start with a Physiotherapy Assessment, so your physiotherapist can examine your symptoms and confirm whether dry needling is appropriate before any treatment begins. If you’ve already been assessed and your physiotherapist has recommended dry needling as part of your plan, you can book directly below.
Is Dry Needling Right For Me?
Dry needling is not suitable for everyone. Your physiotherapist may advise against dry needling, or determine that it is not clinically appropriate, if you:
- are pregnant are taking blood-thinning medication or have a bleeding disorder
- have epilepsy
- have an active skin infection or condition at the treatment site
- have a weakened immune system
This list is not exhaustive. Your suitability for dry needling will always be confirmed by your physiotherapist as part of a clinical assessment, taking your full medical history into account.
If you’re unsure whether dry needling is right for you, call us on 01 611 1740 or email info@spectrumhealth.ie and our Patient Services team can help.
Alternatively, book a Physiotherapy Assessment, so your physiotherapist can confirm whether dry needling is the most appropriate treatment for you.
