Coeliac Disease

Coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition whereby a person has an adverse reaction to the protein gluten, which damages the digestive system. This damage can interfere with the absorption of some nutrients and cause a range of health-related issues. If you have been diagnosed with coeliac disease it is essential that you follow a strict gluten-free diet and avoid foods like wheat, barley and rye for the rest of your life. While there is no cure for coeliac disease, the condition can be managed through diet.

Q&A

What symptoms should I look out for?

If symptoms occur, they can range from mild to severe and may include:

  • Diarrhoea, excessive wind, and/or constipation
  • Persistent nausea and vomiting
  • Recurrent stomach pain and cramping or bloating
  • Iron, vitamin B12 or folic acid deficiency
  • Tiredness and/or headaches
  • Weight loss
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • Skin rash (dermatitis herpetiformis - DH)
  • Tooth enamel problems and/or mouth ulcers
  • Osteoporosis

What should I do if I think I have coeliac disease?

The first step is to visit your GP who will be able to take some tests to see if you have coeliac disease. It is important not to eliminate sources of gluten from your diet before visiting your GP as this can lead to a false negative result. It is also important not to self-diagnose yourself, as this is a real disease with real health consequences.

Often symptoms may be mistaken for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or wheat intolerance so if you have been suffering with 3 or more of the above symptoms above it is advisable to visit your GP. Once you have a diagnosis, whether false or positive, your next step will be to consult with a dietitian for dietary advice.
