As parents we want to do the best we can for our children and at this young age, making sure that their growth is on track and that they are reaching the right child development milestones for their age is one way of looking out for them. You can tell a lot about your child’s development by observing them carefully, watch how they play with their toys or how they communicate with you or how they react to different things. You can use the checklist below as a rough guide that your son or daughter is reaching the appropriate child development milestones for the 2 1/2 year mark.
Child development milestone: 2 ½ years
Looking and Listening/Hearing and Understanding
Child can concentrate by looking or listening
Can attend to adults choice of activity for a short time (with prompts)
Can identify everyday objects by their use e.g. which one do we drink with?
Likes familiar stories that are simple
Talks using 3 or 4 word phrases
Sentences are simple
Starts to use past tense e.g. I falled over
Occasionally pronounces sh, f, s
Size of Vocab: 200+
Pretend actions in sequence e.g. kisses doll, puts doll in bed, covers doll with blanket, says goodnight to the doll
Plays simple make believe games
