Abdominal obesity or otherwise know n as ‘a belly fat’ or being ‘apple shape’ is directly linked to an increased risk of heart disease and diabetes, even in people who are considered a normal weight for their height.
Abdominal obesity – risk to your health
Recent research has shown that even if a person has a healthy BMI (BMI 20-25kg/m²), this alone should not be a comfort into thinking that their health is not at risk. The key indicator is actually where the fat is distributed on the body. Carrying extra weight around your tummy increases insulin resistance which can lead to further weight gain and an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Not only this, people with abdominal obesity tend to have less fat in areas where fat might be protective, such as the hips and legs.
It is also known that aerobic or cardio exercise plays an essential role in reducing abdominal obesity, more so than resistance training.
