Speech Therapy for Children

Speech & Language skills improve dramatically with early Intervention

A recent study carried out in West Tallaght in Dublin (Nov 2012) with the Childhood Development Initiative (www.twcdi.ie) show that children given access to Speech & Language Therapy will have a better start in their schools. This was shown further in particular with kids in poorer disadvantaged areas, that when provided with early intervention S & L services, will have a huge effect on their self-esteem, will improve their literacy skills and overall improving their quality of life as people overcome this debilitating condition which permeates every aspect of day to day life.

The study found that 18% of children who were provided with assistance had shown an improvement in their speech and language skills and had reached a normal standard. Boys (62.5%) had a much higher rate of referral for the service than girls (37.5%).

Chief executive of the Childhood Development Initiative Marian Quinn discussed how the study showed that it could be of great benefit to other disadvantaged areas in Ireland and how it should be introduced throughout our schools.

The research also strongly highlighted the important role of parents. “Educating parents on the need for, and value of, speech and language therapy, is vital to promoting attendance at speech and language services’
